The “Secret Agent” Strategy: A Parent’s Guide to Bully Prevention

As parents, one of our primal fears is the thought of our children being bullied. It’s a scary world out there, and our primary goal before they step outside is their safety. So, what can you do that’s within your power to prevent this nightmare from becoming a reality? Our number one tip for keeping your child safe from bullies is one that might not have crossed your mind yet: Establishing a Trusted Adult.

The "Secret Agent" Strategy: A Parent's Guide to Bully Prevention

Think of a Trusted Adult as a ‘Secret Agent’—a special ally your child can turn to if they face any trouble when you’re not around. This Secret Agent plays a crucial role in your child’s safety net, offering a safe space for them to express their concerns and fears.

How to Find Your Child’s “Secret Agent”:

  1. Identify the Right Individual: Initiate a conversation with your child about their day and the people they interact with. Ask if there’s a Favorite Teacher, Librarian, Nurse, or any other School Adult they feel particularly safe talking to. It’s essential this person is someone your child naturally trusts and feels comfortable with.
  2. Educate on Bullying: Talk to your child about what bullying is, both how it looks and feels, so they’re able to recognize it. Understanding the nuances of bullying can empower your child to seek help when they first encounter it.
  3. Practice Scripting: Once a Trusted Adult is identified, role-play scenarios with your child on how to approach and what to say to their ‘Secret Agent’. Scripting helps build confidence in your child, ensuring they’re prepared to communicate effectively.
  4. Establish Contact: If possible, reach out to the chosen Trusted Adult directly. Let them know they’ve been selected as your child’s safe point of contact and ask if they would mind keeping an extra eye on your child. Most educators and school staff are more than willing to fulfill this role, understanding the community’s role in “it takes a village.”
  5. Seek Additional Allies: Remember, Trusted Adults don’t have to be limited to school. Instructors in extracurricular activities, like martial arts classes, often serve as valuable mentors and protectors for children. They can teach your child to carry themselves with confidence and stand up to bullying.
